About Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion)

Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion), officially named Rokuon-ji, is a world-renowned Zen Buddhist temple and UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally the retirement villa of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was converted into a temple after his death in 1408. The main attraction is the three-story pavilion covered in brilliant gold leaf, which stands serenely over the Mirror Pond, creating a breathtaking reflection. The structure was famously destroyed by arson in 1950 and meticulously rebuilt, a story immortalized in Yukio Mishima's novel, symbolizing Japan's deep commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
