About Kamigamo Shrine (Kamowakeikazuchi Shrine)
Kamigamo-jinja, formally Kamowakeikazuchi-jinja, is one of Kyoto's oldest Shinto shrines, predating the capital's founding in 794. Located upriver from its sister shrine Shimogamo-jinja, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to Kamo Wakeikazuchi, the deity of thunder. The shrine is famous for its pair of conical sand mounds (tate-zuna) which symbolize the sacred mountain Koyama, and for hosting the grand Aoi Matsuri festival. Its expansive grounds include the Tadasu no Mori primeval forest and the clear Nara stream.
