
About Nishi Honganji Temple
Nishi Hongan-ji is the monumental head temple of the Jōdo Shinshū Hongwanji-ha Buddhist organization and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located near Kyoto Station, this vast complex is a living center of faith, renowned for its colossal Momoyama Period wooden halls, numerous National Treasures, and an atmosphere of active worship.

Access to inner buildings like the Shoin and Hiunkaku is typically via scheduled guided tours. Check the official website for current times and availability.
Admission to the main grounds is free. Inner buildings may require joining a (free) guided tour.
A brief walk takes 30-45 minutes. A deeper visit including the garden and a guided tour of the inner buildings requires 1.5 to 2 hours.
The main courtyards are large and flat, but there are steps leading up to all major halls. Interior access is not wheelchair-friendly.
Best Time to Visit
The early morning (around 5:30 AM) offers a profoundly tranquil experience. Attending the 7:00 AM prayer service is a unique opportunity to witness the temple's living faith.
Getting There
A 10-15 minute walk from Kyoto Station. Alternatively, take Kyoto City Bus #9, #28, or #75 to the 'Nishi Hongwanji-mae' stop, directly in front of the temple.
Photography Policy
Photography is strictly forbidden inside the Goeido, Amidado, Shoin, and other interior spaces. Exterior photography is generally permitted. Tripods are prohibited.
