About Genkoan Temple

Genkō-an is a Sōtō Zen temple in the quiet Takagamine district, renowned for two architectural features that embody deep philosophical concepts. The circular 'Window of Enlightenment' and the square 'Window of Confusion' offer differing views of the temple's serene garden, inviting meditation on the nature of existence. The temple also houses a 'blood ceiling' constructed from floorboards of Fushimi Castle, stained with the footprints of samurai who committed seppuku in 1600.
