About Genkoan Temple
Genkō-an is a Sōtō Zen temple in the quiet Takagamine district, renowned for two architectural features that embody deep philosophical concepts. The circular 'Window of Enlightenment' and the square 'Window of Confusion' offer differing views of the temple's serene garden, inviting meditation on the nature of existence. The temple also houses a 'blood ceiling' constructed from floorboards of Fushimi Castle, stained with the footprints of samurai who committed seppuku in 1600.

The temple may close occasionally for Buddhist ceremonies. During peak autumn season (November), rules and fees may change.
Regular admission is ¥400. During the peak autumn foliage season in November, the fee increases to ¥500-600.
A typical visit takes 1-2 hours, allowing ample time for seated meditation in front of the windows and contemplation of the gardens.
The temple has stone steps and uneven surfaces. The interior requires removing shoes and navigating tatami mats, making it generally inaccessible for wheelchairs.
